How Does Two-Way Synchronization Work? 

A Two-Way Sync enables two data sources to mirror one another, regardless of which one of them is modified. All newly added or modified data in the primary source will be synchronized to the destination, and all newly available or modified data in the destination will be synchronized to the source. Two-way sync ensures that any two endpoints, whether they be a user mailbox, public folder, a shared calendar, or almost any two data sources, are not only connected but also always in sync. 

Example:  

Public Folders are a simple, efficient way to store publicly accessible company information. Therefore, having the ability to sync numerous data sources together would be extremely beneficial to organizations, especially when you need to find important contact information. With two-way synchronization, users can sync data back and forth across multiple public folders, ensuring that they are connected and updated anytime one of them is modified.

What is One-Way Synchronization? 

With one-way sync, data is only replicated in one direction—from the primary source to the secondary target. One-way sync transfers updated or newly added data from the source directory to the destination directory but does not transfer changed data from the destination back to the source. The information gets transcribed from its source to its destination (or the data is pulled from source to target, but always in only one direction).  

Example:  

With one-way synchronization, you could sync contacts from a Microsoft 365 user mailbox directly into a public folder. The sync funnel would continuously check for updates in the primary source (User Mailbox) and update the target source (Public Folder) whenever a change is made. 

When is Two-Way Synchronization Helpful? 

A Two-way Synchronization is often used when a company is looking to synchronize data from a variety of different data sources. With two-way sync, you can connect any two endpoints, whether it’s a business address book and Salesforce, a public folder to a shared calendar, or almost any two data sources.
